In Iowa, certified nurse aides and home health aides deliver hands-on care to seniors and vulnerable adults in residential facilities and private homes. Because these workers are often first on the scene in an emergency, their training equips them to respond in first aid and CPR.

Residential care and home care settings staffed by certified nurse aides (CNA) and home health aides, whose 75-hour training curricula are approved by the state.

CPR is taught as part of the 75-hour CNA and home health aide training curricula that qualify workers for the aide market, so staff serving residents in these settings are expected to be trained to respond to a cardiac or breathing emergency.
A recognized, up-to-date first-aid and CPR certificate is the way to keep this competency current; it is in addition to the worker's occupational training and must be renewed periodically.
